The Milwaukee North Line began as a Milwaukee Road commuter route, powered by Milwaukee Road cab units like FP7s, before transitioning under Metra to F40Cs in the 1970s–80s. As time went on, Metra cycled through F40PH/F40PH‑3s, added leased or reassigned F59PH and F59PHI units into the mix, and in recent years has also seen SD70MACH rebuilds appear on the line. Before Metra and RTA oversight, the route and its commuter operations were owned and run by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad—the Milwaukee Road.
