On October 16, 1999, a magnitude 7.0–7.1 Hector Mine earthquake struck the Mojave Desert in Southern California at 2:46 a.m. PDT, centered about 32 miles north of Joshua Tree and near Ludlow. The quake was one of the strongest ever recorded in the region and was preceded by 12 foreshocks. Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, was derailed near Ludlow when the shaking caused the track to shift. The train was moving at 60 mph (slower than its normal 80 mph) and was following a freight train, which may have helped reduce the impact.
