Guernsey Airport is the main air gateway to the island of Guernsey and the largest airport in the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Located in the parish of Forest, about three miles southwest of St Peter Port, the airport plays a vital role in connecting the Channel Islands with the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. It operates under the IATA code GCI and ICAO code EGJB. The airport officially opened on 5 May 1939 after approval for its construction passed by a narrow vote in Guernsey’s government. Aviation activity on the island, however, dates back to World War I, when the French established an anti-submarine seaplane base near Castle Cornet. Early civil aviation services included flying boats and small commercial aircraft linking the island with Southampton and other destinations. During World War II, the airport was briefly used by RAF Coastal Command before Guernsey was occupied by German forces in 1940.
