Built 1978 as a DOE deep-geothermal test site under the cover of a coal operation. When they hit 3,200 feet, they didn't find coal — they found a uranium-rich vein and anomalously warm basalt. The DOE sealed the original shaft, poured concrete, and reopened it in 1983 as "Blackrock Mining Facility" — officially a rare-earth mine, unofficially a heat-sink for the nearby Allegheny Nuclear Research Station
