Killipheder House

Nestled among the rolling hills and open straths of eastern Sutherland, Killipheder Estate served as the ancestral seat of the Sutherlands of Killipheder, a respected cadet branch of the ancient Clan Sutherland. The estate comprised fertile pasture, heather-clad moorland, patches of native birch and Scots pine woodland, and burns that descended from the surrounding hills before joining the River Brora. Generations of tenant farmers grazed sheep and cattle across its lands, while the higher ground provided excellent stalking for red deer and grouse. At the heart of the estate stood Killipheder House, a dignified Highland laird’s residence built of local stone and overlooking the surrounding fields. Though more modest than the great castles of the clan chiefs at Dunrobin, the house reflected the status of a landed gentleman, with a walled garden, stables, coach house, and estate offices clustered nearby.
