First established in 1925 and officially opened in 1948, the airport rose to fame after serving the 1964 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck. Surrounded by steep Alpine mountains, it is globally famous for its technically demanding landing procedures. Complex mountain winds and narrow valley terrain require pilots to receive exclusive specialized training before landing here, classifying it as a Category C airport with high operational difficulty.
