Abbaye Royale de Quedlinbourg

Quedlinburg, Episcopal Principality and Imperial Estate of Quedlinburg, Holy Roman Empire Abbaye Royale de Quedlinbourg / Reichsstift Quedlinburg Quedlinburg Abbey was a noble damsels' foundation, the monastery established in 936 A.D. by Saint Matilda of Ringelheim, mother of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I the Great, to commemorate her spouse, King Henry I of East Francia. The monastery was built on the grounds of Henry's palatial complex, and consecrated by Pope Agapetus II in 948. In 1539, a turning point came when Abbess Countess Anna II of Stolberg joined the Reformation with the monastery and the abbatial lands; as a result, Quedlinburg retained its princely status but remained as a Lutheran convent until secularization in 1802. Quedlinburg is home to a collection of antique artefacts and holy relics, along with the infamous Quedlinburg Chronicles- a considerable assemblage of German history and theology essays written in the Medieval period by the abbey's nuns.
