Camp Rhino _____________ FOUNDED: 2001 LOCATION: Afghanistan PART OF: Registan Desert in Afghanistan CONTROLLED BY: United States Marine Corps -ABOUT- ________ Camp Rhino was the first US Land base established in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. It was in service from 2001-2002. The construction of the base was dangerous at the time due to numerous attacks from the Taliban. Kandahar International Airport was then captured from the Taliban and became the main coalition base in southern Afghanistan. This base was also used for Joint Operations with the Navy SEALs and 75th Ranger Regiment (3rd Ranger Battalion). SASR and US Navy Seabees were also in this base.
