The Wreck of the S.S Galveston {1912}

S.S. Galveston was the second vessel constructed for the Lone Star Line, launched in 1904. Throughout her career, she gained a reputation for repeated mechanical issues and maritime incidents. In 1905, one of her compound engines exploded, causing significant damage to the stern and forcing the vessel to be towed to the Houston Shipyards for extensive repairs. In 1906, Galveston operated jointly with the Fredericksburg on a transatlantic voyage, completing a successful return passage from a French port to Houston. Later that same year, the ship accidentally veered off course en route back to Texas and began heading toward the coast of Louisiana. Attempts to correct her course placed the vessel on a collision path with a submerged rock formation. Despite evasive maneuvers, Galveston struck the obstruction and sank approximately thirty minutes later. The disaster resulted in the loss of 278 lives. The wreck of the Galveston remains on the seafloor of the coast of Louisiana.
