Martuni, and the district itself, became a frontline city during the latter stages of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. It has been the focus of battles between the Artsakh Defense Forces / Armenian Armed Forces and Azerbaijani Armed Forces. Today Martuni is still under the control of Artsakh, surrounded by Azerbaijan from North and South.
