Polis of Cithaeron

Thebes was a major force in Greek history prior to its destruction by Alexander the Great in 335 BC, and was the most dominant city-state at the time of the Macedonian conquest of Greece. It is situated on the coast of the North Euboean Gulf. Myth says it was also the seat of the legendary king Oedipus and the locale of most of the ancient Greek tragedies and legendary mythologies, one of them recalls the visit of Heracles' himself into the Polis.
