Valletta, Capital City

Valletta is the compact, sun-drenched capital of Malta, perched on a rocky peninsula between two deep natural harbors, Marsamxett Harbour and the Grand Harbour. Built in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John after the Great Siege of 1565, Valletta is often described as an “open-air museum” thanks to its dense concentration of Baroque architecture and historic landmarks. Despite being one of Europe’s smallest capitals, Valletta is rich in character. Honey, colored limestone buildings line a neat grid of narrow streets, many ending in dramatic sea views. Ornate balconies, grand churches, and fortified walls give the city a timeless atmosphere.
