T.S.S Great Gable (1921)

Built as a replacement for the quickly aging 'SS City of Birchwood' the Great Gable gained a reputation as a quick, comfortable, and cheap way of crossing Morecambe Bay. In 1927 she struck the Morecambe Bay lightship, severely damaging both ships, she was repaired and continued service the next month. from 27' - 39' she had a relatively normal career. In 1941 she was called in for service as a hospital ship, taking wounded soldiers back to the UK. In 1944 she was heading back to the front-line when a long line of bubbles was spotted off her starboard side, in an act of bravery her crew turned the ship toward the U-boat, she was indeed hit by the torpedo but before she went down she rammed into the U-boat and sank it, she went down a few hours later. 178 out of her 180 strong crew made it out alive, the captain and the first mate went down in the bridge, staying with their ship.
