Herat, Afghanistan, 1872 Great Khorasan Campaign, 1st Gizat Army Commanded by Amir Khan Abid Objective: Remove the Barakzai Amir from power, enforce border concessions to Hindustan With tension between the Mughal Emperor and the Barakzai dynasty at an all-time high, a raiding party from the borderlands would ignite the region into an all-out war, ravaging the countryside. With the Barakazai Amir refusing to pay restitution and housing the perpetrators, the Third Kandahar Expedition would begin, with the Mughals announcing claims on various portions of land held by the Barakzai dynasty. This explosive conflict would rage for three grueling years before the Amir was forced to submit. The final offensive, known as the Great Khorasan Campaign, saw Herat seized by the Mughal Emperor and his infantry, with a long siege that lasted over eight brutal months.
