Fort Ticonderoga, originally known as Fort Carillon, is a massive 18th-century star fort constructed by the French between 1755 and 1758 at the strategic narrows near the southern end of Lake Champlain in northern New York. Designed to command the vital waterway between Canada and the Hudson River Valley, the fort became a focal point of fierce battles during both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Its formidable stone walls and distinctive star-shaped bastions stand as enduring symbols of colonial ambition and military engineering in early North America.
