Aksaz Deniz Üssü, Muğla

Aksaz Naval Base is the naval base of the Turkish Naval Forces on the southeastern coast of the Aegean. It is located in the Marmaris district of Muğla. In addition to military buildings, barracks and social facilities such as base houses and apartments are located on 8,000 (32 km2) hectares of land. Six helicopters are stationed at the base. In order to meet the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces' power and presence in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, comprehensive planning and a search for a naval base location began in the late 1960s. The selected area was Karaağaç Bay in Aksaz, 13 km east of the Marmaris district. This was mentioned by Piri Reis in Ottoman historical documents as the most suitable natural harbor capable of hosting a large navy. The construction of the naval base began in 1983.
