Besançon is a city located in between a loop of the Doubs river, with the population of 30,000 civilians. It was a city ''impossible to capture'', as it was surrounded by large hills and a river, and protected by a fort. The fort was armed with numerous cannons, standing on a hill in the city. Empereur Napoléon Bonaparte used the fort for military parades, inspections, strategic stop or just as a place to rest.
