Description (written by the developer; not a statement by this register)
French warfare is a form of combat in which armies dig deep trenches as a defensive strategy to protect soldiers from enemy fire and to maintain their position. First seen in the American Civil War and the Russo-Japanese War, it became notorious in World War I, where it spanned hundreds of miles on the Western Front. Trench systems were complex, typically featuring front-line trenches facing the enemy, support trenches behind, and communication trenches for movement and supplies. Conditions were brutal: mud, flooding, rats, and diseases like trench foot and dysentery plagued soldiers, alongside the constant threat of artillery and poison gas attacks. “No man's land” was the deadly zone between opposing trenches, often filled with barbed wire and craters from shell explosions. Innovations such as tanks and poison gas were introduced to break the stalemate, but trench warfare remains symbolic of the horrors and stagnation of war. The challenging, exhausting conditions of trench life.
