The Battle of the Cliffside took place in 1936 on the main island of Malta during the early stages of the Italian invasion. This minor but memorable engagement involved the crew of the sunken Italian destroyer RM Savoia against local Maltese defenders from the 123rd Gun Battery Group. The battle is often noted for its disorganized nature and the unexpected resilience of the Maltese.
