The region which the place is located - Sabah, was essentially a "Filipino" territory (in quotes because it was a Sulu territory at the time; didn't see itself as Filipino at the time.) It was later rented out by Britain and later fully taken by Britain. Sulu, realizing its mistake, would attempt to retake its lost territory.
