Makhachkala is the capital of Dagestan, a city located at the center of Dagestan on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The city was founded as a fortress for the Russian Empire in 1844 and was given city status 13 years later. Today, it stands as a hotspot for insurgency in the Caucasus and is a place of conflict between Russian military officials and militants.
