Tsarskoye Selo, the imperial summer residence eighteen miles south of St. Petersburg, Russia, embodies Romanov grandeur in 1911. Acquired by Peter the Great in 1710 from Swedish forces and given to Catherine I, it grew into a splendid estate. Empress Elizabeth commissioned the lavish Catherine Palace (1752), a Baroque jewel with amber rooms and Versailles-inspired gardens, later enriched by Catherine the Great with neoclassical features like the Cameron Gallery and Agate Pavilion. The intimate Alexander Palace, finished in 1796 by Giacomo Quarenghi, now houses Emperor Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra, and their children, including Tsarevich Alexei. The nearby Imperial Lyceum (founded 1811) trained luminaries like Pushkin amid serene parks and lakes. This verdant retreat, with its pavilions and artificial ruins, offers visitors escape and imperial splendor.
