Paleozoic (541-252 million years) is an era of great biological and geological changes. It begins with the Cambrian explosion of life in the oceans, while later plants and vertebrates develop on land. Fish dominate the Devonian, and reptiles and vast rainforests appear in the Carboniferous. The era ends with the greatest mass extinction. The Permian saw Pangea's formation, a drier climate and dominant reptiles. It ended with the greatest mass extinction, likely from volcanic eruptions and climate shifts, leading to the Mesozoic.
