Nyholm Naval Dockyards

Nyholm is a historic naval dockyard and former main base of the Danish Royal Navy in Copenhagen. Established in the late 17th century under King Christian V, Nyholm was created by reclaiming land from the sea to strengthen Denmark’s naval power. For more than 300 years, the area served as the center of Danish naval shipbuilding, military operations, and maritime administration. Many important naval buildings, arsenals, and docks were constructed there, several of which still remain today. Nyholm also played a major role during the Battle of Copenhagen and later conflicts involving Denmark’s fleet. Although most military functions have moved elsewhere, the area remains an important symbol of Denmark’s naval history and maritime heritage. This showcase depicts the dockyards as it would have appeared in 1762 during the looming war with Russian and the invasion of Mecklenburg. In this national security crisis one of the largest Danish fleets ever were fitted out ready for action.
