The jewel in the German crown, the Antares was part of the "Golden Trio," a group of elegant, large ships with luxurious accommodations. They were designed to be a maritime revolution, which was unfortunately overshadowed by the war. The ships were launched in November 1912 and completed in October 1913. Their maiden voyage would take place in December of the same year, and the New Year would be celebrated on board. Halfway through this ship's third voyage, the Great War would begin, and they would be forced to return to Germany along with the Norma and the Sirius. These three ships remained in close convoy until they reached the port. In 1915, when the ship had finally returned to passenger service, it was torpedoed, considered a "cruel act and war crime" by the British. 1,102/2,000 people on board died in the sinking, including 40 Americans who were unlucky enough to return home on that ship.
