In 2001, tensions escalated between Thailand and Myanmar amid accusations of cross-border armed activity near the frontier. Fighting between the Myanmar military and armed groups near Myawaddy created instability along the border opposite Mae Sot. Military deployments increased on both sides as checkpoints were reinforced and crossings were temporarily restricted. While no formal war was declared, the situation highlighted the fragility of border security and the risk of escalation between neighboring states.
