Gali District [Early Access]

GALI DISTRICT, REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA Gali District is a district of Abkhazia with its capital in Gali. Before the war, it was inhabited mainly by Mingrelians (ethnic Georgians), most of whom fled in 1993–1994 and again in 1998; since then, some have returned. It is the only district of Abkhazia with a clear Georgian majority. The population figure is disputed (approximately 29,000-65,000). Along with the Kodori Valley, the area remains one of the most unstable regions and was a site of fighting in 1998.
