Pagaruyuang is a Minangkabau indigenous kingdom centered in the Batusangkar area, Flat Land County, Western Sumatra. This region was once the seat of government of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, a great kingdom that became a symbol of Minangkabau's success and culture. The Pagaruyung Kingdom was founded around the 14th century by Adityawarman, a Majapahit aristocrat of Malay blood who once served in the kingdom. He established this kingdom to unite the various tribes in the Minangkabau plateau and strengthen the influence of local culture. Pagaruyuang is not only a place of history, but also a symbol of Minangkabau's indigenous philosophy that is famous for its principles: "The custom of basandi saraqah, basandi saraqah Kitabullah" (Traditions are based on Islamic Shariah, and Shariah is based on the Quran) The values of custom, matrilineal kinship, and vicariousness are all rooted in the tradition that flourished in Pagaruyuang.
