A brutal 1914 showdown on the Western Front, the First Battle of Ypres marked the desperate struggle to control the key crossroads town of Ypres. British, French, and Belgian forces held the line against repeated German assaults in the final phase of the “Race to the Sea.” The battle ended in massive casualties and the birth of trench warfare, transforming the region into one of WWI’s most infamous battlegrounds.
