As the last natural barrier protecting the German heartland, the Rhine River was heavily guarded, and retreating forces were ordered to destroy all crossings. On March 7, American troops reached the bridge just before its scheduled demolition; though defending engineers detonated charges, the explosives only partially succeeded, leaving the main structure standing. Over the next 10 days, the bridge faced a desperate German counter-offensive involving V-2 rockets and jet bombers. Despite this, the U.S. Army moved 25,000 troops across before the bridge collapsed on March 17, significantly shortening the war.
