The trade post gradually fell out of use between the late 1890's and early 1900's as conflicts against the natives came to an end and American settlement truly took hold in the region. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1937, and thus began to receive maintenance that kept it in fair shape, though the roofs and wood floors had long given way. Following the Flash, the site became a safe haven for locals and travelers due to its defensive features, and now is home to a bounty office, general store, and bar.
