Damascus is the capital of the Sultanate, as well as the nation's largest city. In addition to being the oldest city in the world, Damascus is a major cultural center of the Levant and the Arab world. The area outside the city has been subject to numerous raids by Crusaders hostile to the Sultanate, as well as Bedouin Marauders.
