Description
The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary Confederate military force in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War (1861–1865). Commanded for most of its existence by General Robert E. Lee, it was composed of infantry, cavalry, and artillery organized into corps and divisions. Its troops wore a variety of gray or butternut uniforms, often supplemented with civilian clothing due to supply shortages. The army fought in major battles such as Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, and it operated mainly in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It was known for its strategic mobility and defensive skill, eventually surrendering to Union forces at Appomattox Court House in April 1865.
