𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 - 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 Raised during late fall 1835 and officially organized that December under the General Council, the First Battalion of Permanent Volunteers (The Lafayette Battalion) was established to reinforce the San Antonio River defensive line. Composed of local recruits and North American volunteers, the battalion consisted of four infantry companies totaling 180 to 200 permanent troops. Designed as a highly mobile vanguard to interdict supply lines and fortify outposts, the unit operated under the West Point-trained Lieutenant Colonel James W. Fannin Jr. and Major Benjamin C. Wallace. Integrated into the Goliad garrison, they formed the disciplined defensive core at Fort Defiance. Their service included grueling winter marches and a steadfast defense of the coastal plains, culminating in their encirclement at Coleto Creek and ultimate sacrifice following the Goliad surrender.
