Description
The United States, a rapidly expanding nation shaped by westward settlement and industrial growth, continued to assert its authority across the American frontier. In 1885, the U.S. Army remained heavily engaged in protecting settlements, securing territories, and conducting campaigns across the West. As Apache resistance intensified in the Southwest, American forces were dispatched to pursue and contain groups operating across Arizona, New Mexico, and the Mexican borderlands. With cavalry and infantry scattered among frontier forts, the Army entered a new phase of the Indian Wars, as the campaign against the Apaches became one of its principal military commitments.
