Description
The Eerste Divisie was a field division of the Royal Army of the Kingdom of Holland during the Napoleonic period. It existed under the reign of King Lodewijk Napoleon, and was organized according to French Napoleonic military doctrine. Following the establishment of the Kingdom of Holland in 1806, the Dutch army underwent extensive reforms to align it with the military system of the French Empire. The Eerste Divisie was created as part of this reorganization, replacing earlier republican-era formations and introducing a modern divisional structure capable of independent operations. The division typically consisted of: Several line infantry regiments (Regimenten van Linie) Light infantry (Jagers) for skirmishing and screening duties An attached artillery contingent Supporting service and logistical elements Its structure mirrored that of contemporary French divisions, emphasizing combined arms and operational flexibility.
