Description
Republic of Gotland Capital - Visby Military - Gotland Defense Forces Head of State - Prime Minister Brief history; Instead of Gotland being fully awarded to Sweden in 1645, the island of Gotland retained partial autonomy. During the decline of the Swedish Empire in 1709 the island of Gotland was able to politically maneuver itself into quasi-independence, and then during the Napoleonic Wars the island of Gotland achieved independence. Since then, the island of Gotland has been a Republic lead by the Prime Minister, in the modern era it pursues close ties with the Kingdom of Sweden and the other Baltic nations.
