The Science Department is key to the Foundation's survival, tasked with researching and understanding diverse phenomena. The Science Department specializes in harnessing the power of these anomalous effects and using them for good, such as fighting against hostiles or assisting the wounded whenever possible. Without this department, the SCP Foundation would lose its purpose in understanding the unknown.
