Welcome to the SP&S! The Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railway was formed in 1905 by both the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads to join the major cities of Washington and Oregon. The SP&S's main route started in Spokane and ran south running along the Snake River until the route entered Pasco. The second route [which was connected to the Spokane - Pasco route] runs across the Pasco - Kennewick bridge to end up on the North Bank of the Columbia River, which is why the railway's nickname was the "North Bank Road". That route runs all the way to Portland, Ore. The SP&S merged with 3 other major railroads; NP, GN, and CB&Q in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad, which years later in 1996 merged with the ATSF to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe [BNSF] which operates to this day. SP&S's second route [Pasco-Portland] is actively used by BNSF. The first route has been Abandoned since the 1980's and all that remain are the bridges and tunnels as of 2021.
