3rd Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers #1025801858
Description
Organized on 11 May 1847 for a six-month term of service, the 3rd Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers was raised for the protection of the Texas frontier while other volunteer regiments operated in Mexico. Commanded by Colonel John C. Hays, then serving as Colonel of a regiment in Mexico, the unit was composed of mounted companies drawn from local districts to provide rapid response against raids, safeguard settlements, and maintain order along exposed border regions. Reflecting the established Texan reliance upon mobile frontier defense, the regiment fulfilled its short-term obligation before being discharged in June 1847, its companies returning to their home communities once immediate security concerns had subsided.
