Gelon I, recognizing that only discipline and excellence could safeguard the polis, gathered the finest warriors of the Dorian clans and molded them into a single, unbreakable body. Thus were born the Epilektoi, the Chosen. Clad in bronze that shone like a second sunrise over Ortygia, they stood at the very soul of the army. Where the phalanx threatened to crack, the Chosen pressed in; where the general advanced, they formed his living shield; where the battle demanded courage beyond mortal measure, it was the Epilektoi who stepped forward first. In peace they trained the citizen levies, and in war they became the iron heart of Syracuse. To speak their name was to speak of honor, severity, and the unyielding pride of the polis.
