Ever since the Greek era, scientists and philosophers have hypothesised on the structure of the matter which surrounds us. As our knowledge on physical phenomena (such as electricity and magnetism), models on the structure of atoms were developed by scientists all over the world. Through experiments and observations scientists found new particles and developed new theories on the make-up of matter. Democritus, a natural philosopher, lived in Abdera Greece. Democritus’ mentor originally came up with a theory, in 465 BC, stating “The universe is composed of two elements: The atoms, and the void in which they move.” Democritus took this atomic theory and adopted it. He believed all matter consisted of these invisible particles called atoms, which could not be created or destroyed. Democritus further theorised that atoms differ in shape, size, mass, position and arrangement. With his new atomic theory, Democritus drew the first model of an atom.
