2nd Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifle Volunteers #1037874045
Description
Organized in June and July of 1846 in response to the opening of war with Mexico, the 2nd Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifle Volunteers was composed of mounted frontiersmen and veteran volunteers accustomed to service along the Texas border. Commanded by Colonel George T. Wood, the regiment was mustered into United States service to reinforce operations along the Rio Grande and in northern Mexico during the first campaign season of the conflict. Drawing upon Texas’ established mounted rifle tradition, mobility, marksmanship, and aggressive scouting, the regiment fulfilled its term of enlistment before being honorably discharged in October 1846, its men returning home as federal forces continued deeper into Mexican territory.
