𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 Organized in October 1835 and formally mustered at Velasco that December, the Georgia Battalion was raised in Macon and Columbus through private donations to aid the Texian cause. Marching under the azure-and-white Troutman Lone Star flag, this disciplined force of 120 to 150 well-equipped foreign volunteers provided a highly cohesive asset to the army. Structurally divided into four companies, the battalion was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel William Ward and Major Warren J. Mitchell. Integrated into the Goliad garrison under Colonel Fannin at Fort Defiance, the unit was utilized for vital reconnaissance due to their strict adherence to standard military drill. They proved their tactical worth at Mission Refugio in March 1836 before being overwhelmed during the general retreat, which ultimately led to their capture and subsequent sacrifice at the Goliad Massacre.
