3rd Company of Marines #1067262202
Description
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 – 𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲 “The Marine Battery” The Marine Artillery Detachment was organized in July 1840 at Galveston to provide trained personnel to assist with light guns during naval and shore operations. Rather than a separate artillery corps, the detachment consisted of marines instructed in handling small pieces afloat and during landing service where additional gun crews were required. Assigned to shipboard stations and expeditions ashore, its members supported naval gunners and operated light cannon in defense of ports and temporary positions. The detachment reflected the adaptable role of marine forces within the Republic’s small naval establishment. Known informally as the Marine Battery, the unit represented the extension of marine service to the handling of weapons beyond the musket when circumstances demanded. Company Cap: 10
