O Ducado de Coimbra foi criado em 1415 pelo rei D. João I de Portugal e concedido ao Infante D. Pedro, seu segundo filho, como reconhecimento da importância da Casa de Avis. Ao longo da história, o título esteve ligado a membros da família real e representava prestígio, influência política e proximidade à Coroa.
