Description
In 1810, the Kingdom of Westphalia stood as one of the most progressive and modern states in Europe, representing the very best of Napoleonic reform. Ruled by Jérôme Bonaparte under the guidance of Napoleon, it swept away outdated feudal traditions by abolishing serfdom, ending aristocratic privileges, and introducing the Napoleonic Code, which established equality before the law and protected property rights. The kingdom also promoted religious tolerance and granted civil rights to groups that had long faced discrimination, making it a beacon of justice and opportunity compared to many neighbouring states. With its efficient French-style administration, modern legal system, and ambitious reforms, Westphalia became a showcase of enlightened government and social progress.
