Lentolaivue 24 HISTORY: Lentolaivue 24, or LeLv 24 for short, was the top Finnish fighter squadron of World War II. It was formed in 1933. It fought with distinction in the Winter War of 1939 to 1941. It was equipped with B-239 fighters (F2A Buffalo) in the beginning of the Continuation War. In 1943 LeLv 24 was equipped with German aircraft. In 1944, the squadron was renamed to Hävittäjälentolaivue 24, Fighter Squadron 24, or HLeLv 24 for short. The squadron was dissolved mere days before the Finnish signed a peace treaty with the Soviets. LeLv 24 by the end of the war shot down 877 Soviet aircraft. Famous members of the squadron included the two top aces of Finland. Warrant Officer Ilmari Juutilainen, with 94 confirmed destroyed aircraft, and Captain Hans Wind, with 75 confirmed destroyed aircraft.
