Description
French Army Established: Reorganized in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War During the Third French Republic (1870–1940), the French Army was a central force in national defense and identity. Rebuilt after defeat in 1871, it became a large, conscript-based force. It played a major role in World War I, suffering heavy losses but contributing to victory. In the interwar period, the army adopted a defensive strategy, exemplified by the Maginot Line. However, outdated tactics and slow modernization left it unprepared for Germany’s Blitzkrieg in 1940, leading to France’s rapid defeat and the fall of the Republic.
