Description
The Order of Wizards, the Istari. The Istari, known in Middle-earth as the Wizards, were a small order of Maiar sent by the Valar in the Third Age to aid the Free Peoples against the rising shadow of Sauron. Clad in the frail forms of aged Men, they were deliberately constrained in power and knowledge, tasked not with domination but with counsel, inspiration, and resistance to evil through wisdom rather than force. Each Wizard bore a distinct nature and purpose—most notably Gandalf the Grey, Saruman the White, Radagast the Brown, and the two enigmatic Blue Wizards—reflecting differing responses to their mandate. Though immortal in origin, the Istari were subject to fatigue, doubt, and moral failure, underscoring Tolkien’s theme that true authority lies in humility, perseverance, and the careful stewardship of power.
